How Business Process Management (BPM) and Enterprise 2.0 could meet?

I was searching for the past two weeks for Enterprise 2.0 success stories.  And since I have a Business Process Management (BPM) background, I could not help myself to extend my search to look for connections between BPM and Enterprise 2.0.  Do they correlate? Or contradict each other?

To prepare the ground for this topic, I will start with a reference to a post by Professor Michael Rosemann of the BPM Research Group of Queensland University of Technology on BPM and Twitter, which was published on the ARIS Community site.  He lists three possible scenarios, where BPM and Enterprise 2.0 can work together:

  • Follow your processes: processes are corporate assets and managers are most likely to be interested in following the changes in their processes.
  • Processes follow personnel: this scenario is less intuitive than the first one. However, the idea is for the process to be aware of the change and react if the manager is absent and redirects the tweets to his substitute.
  • Have a process instance tweet, either for milestone notification or with a link to the process instance, acting as a BPM inbox.

It is important to mention that these scenarios may not be applicable for the current state of twitter. But they are excellent to demonstrate how these two concepts can collaborate.

At the first glance, BPM and Enterprise 2.0 two broad topics might not look related at all.  But there are actually some similarities:

  • BPM and Enterprise 2.0 encourage organizations to breakdown the vertical silos.
  • They both promote innovation and creativity in the organization.
  • Both concepts are associated with business process change or even culture change in organization.
  • Both concepts need change management in order to be implemented within the organization.

On the other hand, there are some differences between BPM and Enterprise 2.0:

  • Whilst BPM aims to standardize and structure business processes, Enterprise 2.0 creates a free and collaborative environment.
  • BPM benefits are easier to quantify compared Enterprise 2.0.

Enterprise 2.0 aims to improve the collaboration and performance in the organization, which falls under the BPM framework.
